Most of the ideas below have come from the book Emergency Food Storage and Survival Handbook by Peggy Layton.
Although most of our preparations are for long-term infrastructure collapse, there may be a normal emergency that could require a short-term evacuation. We live near several nuclear plants, a nuclear weapons manufacturing facility, several chemical plants, etc. Who knows what could happen.
Also, and I would call this Plan C, we might need to evacuate our home even in the event of an infrastructure collapse. Considering all the preparations we are doing to get our home ready for such an event, we need to be prepared to abandon our home if that becomes necessary for some reason.
Short-term evacuation list – things to do / think about:
- Decide on a rendezvous point in case we have to leave separately or get separated from some reason
- Send email to close friends and family letting them know of our plans. Leave a paper note behind in house if email is down.
- Consider purchasing motorcycles for my wife and I. I just have seen too many movies where there is gridlock on the interstates during evacuations (e.g. Deep Impact). The idea of us on motorcycles makes me laugh, but I think we need to consider at least one.
