  1. Car Kit – Everyday. These are things that should be in our van at all times regardless of circumstances. (all will fit in moderately sized storage bin if it is not already in the car somewhere else – e.g. glove compartment)
    1. Strong Flashlight.  I am going with one that takes batteries (versus rechargeable w/ ac adapter) and LED lamps.
    2. LED Headlamp – allow one to change flat tire in the dark without needing someone else to hold a flashlight.
    3. 2 Way Radios (in case one of us needs to walk to gas station and are in area where cell phones don’t work)
    4. Flashing Lights (instead of flares).  Flashing lights last longer and no flame or lighter required.
    5. Extra Batteries.  For flashlight, flashing lights, and 2-way radios, and LED headlamp.
    6. Spotlight.  Found one for $4.  Use this to get a good look at any strangers approaching the car.
    7. Reflector(s).  Put these behind car so that oncoming traffic can easily see us.
    8. Jumper Cables
    9. Jack and Lug Wrench
    10. Tire Pump
    11. Fix-A-Flat
    12. Air pressure gauge
    13. Ice Scraper
    14. Small First-Aid Kit
    15. Multipurpose Knife
    16. Toilet Paper
    17. Emergency Cash – $300 (think power outage – you need food, gas, and possibly a hotel room)
    18. 2 gallons of gas – we are using 2 one gallon tanks so that we will have more storage options.  Our van gets approximately 22  mpg. Surely, we can find a gas station within 40 miles.
    19. Poncho for each person (in case we need to walk in the rain)
    20. Emergency blanket for each person (these are inexpensive and trap body heat)
    21. Storage container to put most of these into (things like the jack obviously have their own storage location)
    22. Tow rope / chain (we will not be keeping one of these)
  2. Car Kit – Evacuation (it’s own storage bin). These are things specific for the van that need to be packed prior to evacuating and are specific to the vehicle.
    1. 5 Gallon Gas Can
    2. Spare Oil
    3. Spare Radiator Hose
    4. Spare Fan Belt
    5. Spare Fuses
