Hopefully, we will be in our van if we are required to evacuate. However, we need to be prepared to travel long distances on foot. Therefore, this is our 72 Hour Emergency Kit for when we are hoofing it on foot.
I will prepare this list in more detail after we have all of our 72 Hour Emergency Kit items. I will see what we can carry when considering our space and weight limitations.
Some might think that you just load up the van and just pack up what you can if you have to go it on foot. I don’t think this is wise. There are essentials and there are wants. I need to make sure all the essentials can be transported with us if we need to walk. Thus, I want to make sure we can carry those things ahead of time. If not, then I will need to figure out a way to find smaller and/or less heavy items. Who knows in what kind of hurry we might be in at the time we are called upon to leave our vehicle. I don’t want any surprises if/when the time to start walking is forced upon us.
On that note, I think it might be a good idea to have all the essentials pre-packed into the backpacks ahead of time in case we need to make a quick get away.
Good lord, I know how crazy this all sounds. The chances of ever having to do this crazy stuff is minimal, but the risk vs. reward is too great to not be prepared in this way.
A few things I wanted to capture now:
- Stroller? The idea of carrying a squirming 2 year old in a backpack does not sound like fun, plus I need to carry a backpack full of things we need. Whatever stroller we use needs to fold up nicely since space in the back of the van is going to be at a premium, AND it needs to have wheels that can take a beating / possibly even off-road. We also might want to consider having some spare wheels. Carrying our 2 year old on our backs or expecting her to walk is not realistic.
- If we have to leave the van, then hopefully we will be near a shopping center of some kind. We will “borrow” a buggy if we can. Hopefully there is a Target nearby; their buggies are of much higher quality than those at Wal-mart. The buggy could be a huge help. Thanks to The Road for this idea.
